NIH awards to test ways to store, access, share, and compute on biomedical data in the cloud

Nov 06, 2017

Twelve awards totaling $9 million in Fiscal Year 2017 will launch a National Institutes of Health Data Commons Pilot Phase. A data commons is a shared virtual space where scientists can work with the digital objects of biomedical research, such as data and analytical tools. The NIH Data Commons will be implemented in a four-year pilot phase to explore the feasibility and best practices for making digital objects available through collaborative platforms. For more information please see the full press release at https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-awards-test-ways-store-access-share-compute-biomedical-data-cloud

BISTI Consortium Meeting (July 7, 2017)

Jul 25, 2017

Dr. Michele Taylor presented on EPS’s Integrated Risk Information Systems (IRIS) for Chemical Evaluations. (presentation included) EPA’s IRIS system includes new workbench tools for interactive review of current literature (SWIFT-REVIEW). Tools includes advanced machine learning capabilities to find related studies and advanced visualization tools to quickly review literature as a compendium. Current assessment indicates a ~23% improvement in work saved over other methods.

NIH Data Commons Pilot Phase (RM-17-026)

Jul 07, 2017

In the first stage, awardees will design innovative solutions that meet the needs of one or more of the computational, data and scientific key capabilities of the Data Commons. It is expected that awardees will participate collectively as a consortium and work cooperatively toward achieving NIH’s comprehensive vision for an interoperable, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) compliant, multi-cloud NIH Data Commons founded on open source and open standards. The Commons will be designed to comply with the principles of making digital objects FAIR. In the second stage, the solutions developed by the DCPPC will be implemented.

THe NIH Commons Credits Portal is now OPEN

Dec 16, 2016

The portal supports the NIH Commons Credits Pilot. During the operation of the Pilot, investigators will submit simple and rapid online credit applications to acquire additional resources for extending computational research on active NIH grants. Capabilities of the portal also include a help desk for providing information on the application process; a knowledge base and services catalog to help select suitable conformant cloud services; and a blog for sharing information and experience among investigators.
